The Amount of Media I'm Exposed to

It is astounding the amount of media I’m exposed to in one week. I knew I watched a lot of TV, and I’m always in front of my computer, sometimes with the TV on as background noise. However, I was quite surprised when I tracked the amount of hours of media I listened to, watched and read.

When I sat down and guessed the amount of TV I watched I knew it would be a high number, I’m very interested in TV shows. I like to watch certain shows, and as a college student the TV seems to always be on. I made an estimate of watching 24 hours a week of TV, but actually I watch around 32 on average per week. With watching movies in a movie theatre it depends on the week, some weeks I go out to see a movie and that would add about 3 hours, and this week I did see a movie so that was another three hours added to my media exposure.

Another large number I knew right off was going to be hours spent using my computer. I am attached to my computer, especially AIM. I guess initially that I spent around 30 hours in front of my computer a week. It turns out that it is almost 40 hours a week I am in front of my computer either surfing the web, writing emails or talking on AIM. That is so much time!
If I listen to the radio, it’s usually in my car and I would estimate about an hour spent there. I listen to about a four to five hours of music a week, and an hour reading magazines a week. And I usually spend about 2 hours reading text books a week.

All together my total media exposure consists of approximately 80 hours a week! That is so much exposure for just one person, it’s amazing the different view points and opinion one can get from just watching one television program, never mind 80 hours!

Interesting. Plus you haven't taken into account all the "indirect" exposures. Did you try "fasting" for one day, and avoiding media? --MM
